Japan: Japanese earthquake and tsunami update

Japanese-earthquake-and-tsunami-update

On Friday 11 March, a major earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale struck the east coast of Japan. The earthquake triggered a tsunami, which has caused widespread damage and multiple fatalities.

Japan Youth Hostels (JYH) has been gathering information from all hostels in Japan. The worst affected area is the Tohoku region, northeast of Tokyo, and more specifically the prefectures Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima. The majority of the hostels in the JYH network are ok. Visitors and staff are safe and the buildings have only suffered minor damage. Two hostels have however suffered severe damage. The hostels are:
  • Paira Matsushima YH in Nobiru Higashi-Matsushima City (Miyagi Pref.)
  • Rikuzen-Takada YH in Kesen-machi, Rikuzen-Takada City (Iwate Pref.)
JYH are publishing updates, hostel by hostel, on their homepage. For the latest updates please go to Japanese website. The Japanese Red Cross has been working on the ground since the disaster began, mobilising 86 teams, made up of around 600 doctors, nurses and support staff, to provide first aid and healthcare and assess the damage and needs of the communities affected. If you would like to show your support please see the Red Cross Appeal for further information about the work they are doing and how you can donate to Japan Tsunami Appeal.
