The new Vila Nova de Cerveira Youth Hostel, which opened its doors on 19th January 2008, results from an architecture project combining a new building with the refurbishment of an old elementary school. Located in the town centre, this YH offers modern, comfortable and well-equipped facilities and accommodates 60 guests in a choice of eight twin en-suite rooms (one suitable for wheelchair users), two double en-suite rooms and ten four-bedded en-suite rooms. Nesting within the castle’s walls and overlooking the Minho River, Vila Nova de Cerveira, located in the north of Portugal, is a small town, dating from the 14th century, of great historical and cultural relevance, with many churches and chapels, a wide variety of monuments and beautiful houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Minho River offers some spectacular landscapes, acting also as a natural border between Portugal and Spain, and of great influence on the regional gastronomy. Well known by its Contemporary Art Biennial, motor of cultural development, Cerveira, which every two years opens its doors to the creative artists of the whole world, has become an open-air art gallery with a number of modern sculptures spread all over town. In August and very close to Vila Nova de Cerveira takes place the annual Paredes de Coura Summer Festival which attracts large crowds of young people for the very best in international and Portuguese rock music. Cerveira definitely has more than enough arguments to worth a visit, a town where art modernity and rock festivals cohabit in perfect harmony with the unique landscapes and traditions of the “Verde Minho”.

Sunday to Wednesday prices from 8.25€

Inserted in river Minho delta, in the beautiful green and fresh landscape that shapes the region of Alto Minho, the small town of Vila Nova de Cerveira was founded by king D. Dinis charter in the 14th century and its name was given by a big colony of deers settled in the mountains and valleys around. Placed at the border, you can cross it to the Spanish side, to the “vila” of Goyan, by the new bridge called "da Amizade" (Friendship), built in 2004. Cerveira still preserves through its old narrow streets and roads some monuments that testify a rich historical past, and in the nearby hill you can find the majestic statue of the Deer King (a remarkable iron sculpture) from where you can appreciate a splendid "eagle-sight" of all landscape around the Minho river and its mellancholic isles "dos Amores" (of Love) e "da Boega", and Galicia's riverside. But Vila Nova de Cerveira ex-libris is Arts, so this place is recognized as The Village of Arts, once it welcomes its famous International Biennial of Arts every two years. Just 2 minutes from the Hostel you can breathe the fresh air of Castelinho Park, and see the fishes just passing by in the Aquamuseum. Those "radicals" got their own privileged area to practice roller skate, rollerblade, skateboard, cycling, climbing. You´ve also got a square mile field ring for soccer, handball, basketball or volleyball practicing.
