The Westman Islands is a group of 15-18 islands. The biggest one is Heimaey which is the only one inhabited with a population of 4.400. The islanders have their own traditional culture, like bird hunting, egg collecting and cliff rappelling. In January 1973 an eruption began in Heimaey and lasted until early July. The ash ruined and buried almost 400 buildings. Shortly after the eruption came to an end 2000 of the 5300 people, who had lived in Heimaey before the natural disaster, moved back. The remains of the eruption are among the island´s most fascinating historical locales. Celebrating that 30 years have passed since the eruption a project has been started which is called the Pompei of the North. It is about saving the remains of the eruption and make them more accessible; including digging up 7-10 houses which disappeared under ashes. There are many activities in Heimaey: sailing around the island, bird watching, golf, hiking, horseback riding, museums, swimming, whale watching etc. The hostel is located in the towns centre and all services are close by. The reception is located in Hotel Thorshamar (the house next door) and is open 24 hrs.

Forgot to ask for blanket and pillow at reception, so spent a rather chilly night as no one was in after 23:00.

The space was ok, but the best part was the guy working there telling us to not bother with a 'guided tour' of the island - you can walk the whole thing for free! Good looking out on that tourist trap, buddy.

Probably cheapest hostel we stayed in (out of 7) in Iceland and one of the nicest as a former guest house. We were left sheets and towels which was unexpected! Very large room for our family of 4. Kitchen was not ideally kitted out and very little room for lots of people, but we managed to cook while no-one else around. Not far to walk to anywhere on the island and we had lunch on top of a warm volcano and then saw plenty of puffins on the cliffs above the campsite, we didn't even need to head for the sea cliffs. Hotel reception where you check in was happy for us to leave our bags for 4 hours from time of boat arrival until we could get into our rooms at 3-4pm. Lovely island with lots to see and do and we could have spent a lot longer than the 20+ hours we had, but had to get to Reykjavik for our flight the following day.

A bit expensive, even for Iceland, being charged a full triple rate for two of us in a three-bed room. A bit plain, but perfectly adequate. Decent small kitchen.

In one bedroom there were mice, who nibbled away on our food when we were gone. But apart from that the cleanliness was good.
