Ideally located in the SAIDA AJOULA (name of a saint woman) street, and close to the historical heart of the city of Tunis, the colourful and sweet-smelling souks, the Medina and the shopping centres, our typical hostel is quiet and relaxed. Don't hesitate to come in, and you'll arrive in a ceramic patio, where the Andalusian coolness is in harmony with the Arab-Muslim openness. In nicely furnished bedrooms, you'll admire the Tunisian appeal and you will enjoy its elegant PAST. After endlessly constructive strolls, full of culture, through the pedestrian alleyways of the Medina, under the Mediterranean sun, this peaceful and cool haven will seem to have fallen from heaven. Our cuisine is refined and inventive, Tunisian and international, and offers a subtle mix of tastes and flavours. Our lunch small dishes will enchant every palate. Let yourself be captivated by this warm place, where relaxation goes with activities and visits, cultural as well as scenic. The whole hostel team will be happy to warmly welcome you.

I made several bookings for this hostal via the Hi Hostal website and on both occasions when I arrived the hostal had no idea whether I had a booking or not. For the second booking when I arrived I wrote down and presented the booking number which made no difference at all and they still had no idea that I had a booking and what type of room I had booked. On this occasion I had booked and paid a deposit for a room but because they had no idea of my booking I had to stay in the dorm and the deposit was not deducted from the dorm price. This hostal obviously does not have any idea of the hostal booking system and either don't have access to email or don't bother to read their emails. The other 3 or 4 hostal bookings I made and stayed in while travelling were all good value and professionally run. Regards Jack

Although full of ancient charm, pretty tiled walls, high ceilings & pillars, there were no fans in the hostel & we suffered a great deal in the 48 degree heat! Staff were ok. Very loud at night due to ground floor dungeon like rooms being off the large main echo inducing interior room. We also observed that bed sheets were not changed between guests. Breakfast was stale bread with a little butter. For a much better deal look up Grand_Hotel_de_France

Hostel is very exotic-the walls are covered with something similar to mosaics, the rooms are not very intimate-you share the same roof with a neighbour, between roof and door there is a big space(you hear everything and everybody can hear you).In our room there was a"secret room"-a hole in the wall, where was empty room with just one window. It was good-we got fresh air from outside. The breakfast was always the same-bread,butter,pear jam and coffee. The bathroom is common, not always there was a hot water. The hostel is closed at 9 p.m.-they said it because of the safety reasons. What was very nice was that one day there was a weeding reception in the hostel's restaurant and we were invited to taste the Tunisian cuisine. About the finding way to the hostel:the easiest way to get there is entering the Medina's gate and taking the right patch into the souqes(not left!).After few minutes of going up stright, you see on the right sign "auberge jeunesse, hostel international".

We did not actually stay at the hostel, my older female friend was very concerned about safety at night in the Medina. There were only two other guests and one of them told us that the manager was not on site over night. We had already paid in full and even though we gave 24hrs notice for some of the period were refused any refund at all. I think if the manager had been more welcoming and given more information when we first arrived, we may have been confident about staying.
