Selfoss is a lovely town of around 8000 inhabitants situated in the south of Iceland. It is conveniently located by road no. 1, a perfect stop for those who are travelling inland to Gullfoss and Geysir or the highlands, for those who want to explore the south shore or those continuing onwards on the main road. The municipal swimming pool is great, with several hot tubs, sauna and a slide. The town is on the banks of Ölfusá river and an evening walk on the riverbanks is a great idea, and if you are into golf there is a nice 9 hole course on the outskirts of town. Mt Ingólfsfjall is close by and makes for a good hike, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view over the plains of South Iceland to the mountains to the north and east and all the way to the Westman Islands off the coast. In town you can also visit the Art Museum and the church which has beautiful stained glass windows.

Selfoss Hostel is in an old remodelled house in the centre of town. It has 1-4 persons rooms with and without private facilities, well equipped guest kitchen, laundromat for guests. The patio is a great place to sit down and relax with a nice cup of coffee and write those postcards. Breakfast is served at the Hostel, you can also purchase a take-away lunchbox and coffee and cakes at the Hostel’s café. The receptionists are a fountain of knowledge and can assist you with your questions, as well as booking daytours in the area.

Overall was a clean and quiet stay at the hostel. When I first arrived there was no one at the desk, walked around the building trying to find someone who worked there, came across someone who was a guest I think, was able to call and get someone to come to the desk. Other then that it was very central, was the only person in the hostel one of the nights.

Hostel response:
We have a bell in our reception, if you ring that we come in less than one minute. There were other guests in the house as ussualy, seems You have missed a lot... :)

Very nice hostel - more like a hotel with room keys and more than enough bathrooms. Large self-catering area and cosy TV area. Very friendly staff. Only down side was a lack of soap in the dispensers. Otherwise, wonderful!

There were very few people during the low season so the owner gave me the dorm room all to myself. She was very friendly and helpful. A huge thank you to her for doing that. I will definitely stay at this place again the next time I am in the area. Loved my stay here.
