The town of Schleswig was founded at the ancient Viking market settlement of Haithabu. There is a reconstruction of the Viking village where you can find out how they lived and which tools they used. Boat trips on the Schlei Fiord are a very popular pastime. Nearby attractions include a sports ground, an indoor swimming pool and a basketball and handball field with artificial turf (500m from the hostel). The town has a bike rental (please make reservations well in advance), a boat rental, cinemas and on the edge of town there is a dance club.
The youth hostel is located just above the town centre. It has been extensively modernised and is surrounded by many sports facilities. Attractions: Haithabu Viking Museum, Gottorf Castle, Schleswig Cathedral and the fishing village of Holm.

| Bus: | Exit Schloss Gottorf, from there straight on, after 200m at the Shell petrol station turn left into Flensburger Straße, straight on, third street on the right, Neuwerkstraße (direction police station), follow the main road, turn right into Spielkoppel. The hostel is located approx. 50m further, on the left. |
| Rail: | Schleswig train station is on the Kiel-Flensburg route. From the stations it’s a 30 min walk to the hostel which has easy access to local transport and the central bus station. Locally there is a coach rental available. |
