Halfway between Reykjavík and Akureyri, you will find Sæberg Hostel located just 1 km off highway no. 1 in Hrútafjörður. Set in a renovated farmhouse by the sea, Sæberg Hostel is one of the HI network of hostels in Iceland and is ideal for those looking for a peaceful countryside setting to reload the batteries away from the hustle and bustle of the world.

Guests can relax in the hostel’s outdoor hot tub, which is heated with the geothermal water from the local hot spring. The more active ones can explore walking paths along the shore and up to the moor to enjoy the wild bird life which includes the usual suspects such as Eider and Arctic Tern (in season) as well as less common ones such as the Great Northern Diver or even the White-tailed Eagle. Within walking distance of the hostel, guests can find the local historical museum with popular exhibitions that uncover the daily life of past generations in the area.

Apart from guestrooms accommodating 2-7 people, cottages with self-contained kitchen facilities and toilets, accommodating 4-5 people each, can also be rented at the hostel. A camping ground is also located near the hostel.

Guests should note that the next grocery shops and restaurants are located 15 km away from the hostel. It is therefore advisable to arrive equipped with food supplies, especially if travelling without a car. Guests arriving at the hostel by bus should indicate Reykir as the name of their destination.

It's the biggest hostel we ever seen in Iceland..It's located in a beautiful quite place ,near the fjord..There is no noise here, so you can sleep very well..We don't like just one thing: we were the only one guests(and it was really beautiful),but we slept all night with the hostel's door open, because there was no key for close it.

We were the only ones there! It's in the middle of the middle of nowhere to quote my bf. Clean and comfortable. Would be an ideal location to watch the aurora on a clear night.

I loved this hostel. We stayed out of the main season but that didn't impact the quality of accommodation. I loved the location, it was fairly remote. I especially loved the hot spring fed pool. A very sociable way to chat to fellow travelers.

The spiral staircase is a bit tricky but the hostel is comfortable & clean, a nice place to stay when driving between the north and Reykjavik.
