Hostel Details

With its population of 200,000 Saarbrücken has the typical charm of a medium-sized town. The rebuilt Old Town around St. Johanner Markt square has something Mediterranean about it, ideal for a stroll on a balmy summer night. Most of the town’s Baroque attractions were built by the architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel: St Louis’s Church (Ludwigskirche) and Ludwigsmarkt square, Saarbrücken Castle, St John’s Basilica (Basilika St. Johann) and the fountain at St. Johanner Markt square. There is also the charming architecture by Georg Hauberisser: Town Hall, Colligate Church St. Arnual, the old bridge, the reconstructed Saar crane below Wilhelm Heinrich bridge. Further Attractions: Franco-German Garden (40 ha, roughly 100 acres) with the largest water organ in Europe, chair lift and many flower beds, centrally located Bürgerpark, Zoo and Game Park in the Stadtwald forest.

Arts and culture: Opera, operetta, ballet, theatre, musicals and concerts, Max Ophüls Film Festival, Young French Theatre Festival, Puppet Festival etc.

Sports and leisure: Playing fields, forest tracks, canopy trails, indoor and outdoor pools, leisure pool CALYPSO (near trade exhibition ground), tennis, game park, zoo, Franco-German Garden, boat tours to France on the Saar river, walks and cycle paths, cinema, theatres,

Sightseeing: “Völklinger Hütte” steel works (UNESCO world heritage), St Louis Church, Castle, Museum for Prehistory and Early History, Botanic Garden …

Tours: Metz/Verdun (Metz Cathedral, Amifort Hackenberg Fortress), Luxemburg (sightseeing including casemates), primeval forest outside Saarbrücken, boat trip to Saargemünd (France), sightseeing and return trip on the Saarbahn train, visit to Göttelborn mine including the world’s tallest shaft tower.

Cycling: Excellent cycle tracks along Saar river or along Saar Coal Canal to France.
