What I appreciated most was the fact that it was quiet and away from all the hussle and bussle of downtown Hong Kong. This peacefulness combined with the great service I recieved from the Ngong host at this hostel made it an ideal location for me to relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain surroundings.

The hostel-keeper is very kind and helpful, but this place is almost impossible to find. Don't bother with the instructions provided- just ask one of the store keepers outside of the monastery. They are used to helping confused hostellers. It is a ten minute walk into the wilderness, and the place looks straight out of a horror film- secluded, poorly lit, with a barbed-wire fence. It was December and there was no heat, which usually isn't a problem in Hong Kong but we were a bit chilled. Everything on the mountain closes after 6 and doesn't open until 9 or 10 at the earliest. That means you're on your own for evening entertainment. We were the only ones there, so we made the best of the creepy vibe.

Most of the Hostils in HK are not convenience to users. They do not near MTR stations non busy areas. Really not convenient to travellers.

This place was incredibly dirty. I woke up one morning with bed bug bites all over one arm and the bathroom is clearly not cleaned regularly. You are not allowed to check-in between 10 AM and 4 PM, which is a ridiculous time frame, so we were locked out when we first arrived for over an hour. You are also not allowed to come back after 11 PM. Since the hostel is so out of the way, it is unreasonable to set an 11 o'clock curfew, as this isn't enough time to do anything. We were told that if we wanted to return later, we should just call the reception and let them know the time we would be back. My friend and I went and played trivia one night and wanted to stay until it was finished, so we called the reception and said we'd like to return around midnight or 12:30. We were told that if we were later than 11, we would not be able to get in. Other than this issue, the staff was helpful.

Mosquitoes and unidentifiable flying insects in my room kept me awake all night. Couldn't make pot-noodles because the urn in the kitchen wasn't configured to make boiling water. On the up-side, the guy on staff that day was very helpful, even calling a cab for me when I left early the next morning. They FORCE you to join the Hosteling International association, otherwise, you can not stay at their hostel, which increases the cost of staying significantly. If they are going to charge that fee, they should at least hire extra staff to maintain accommodation that size. It's really a two person job.
