Set on the Mediterranean coast, Marseille has a colourful harbour and an intriguing old town, all within fairly easy reach of this hostel which is located in a residential area 5km south of centre, close to the beach, and just down Marseille's famous Calanques. Accommodation is in 2-6 bedded rooms and facilities include laundry and meals. Please note that membership is mandatory; for further information, please contact the association: fuaj.org

The youth hostel offers many activities : Sea kayaking, hiking, climbing and sailing. All of them considered as different ways to discover the Calanques: a future National Park.

From discovering to improvement, in the form of half journeys, journeys or courses over several days, these outings are open to everybody. More information on the web site www.ajmarseille.org

The staff from the bar/ canteen was really friendly, the staff from the from desk not very much. The bathrooms smelled horribly, and many times the water from the showers was bearly warm. Lots of old people staying there, so not very nice atmosphere. The food from the canteen is very good and cheap. You have to pay for the internet.

the hostel security was a joke, simply asking for a key at reception allowed you the key to any room. The hostel was soulless, and in fact, managed to take a little piece of my soul. The location was ridiculously out of town, far from anything. i felt as though i was in a suburb, not a city.

Great place- spacious and clean- not a "party hostel" by any means... Breakfast was definitely French- bread, coffee, OJ and yogurt. The biggest drawback is that it is quite a bit outside of downtown- not really walkable at all- you have to take the metro to almost the end of the line, then the 44 bus for about 20 minutes... There is a nice beach very close with a ferris wheel though. not. bad.

noisy until late at night with young children allowed to run thru the halls yelling, no supervision, doors slamming. Breakfast good but dinners terrible. You need some real cooks.

Nice hostel, close to the beach. No air con which made sleeping very uncomfortable and unpleasant in the summer.
