The charming town of Ljungskile lies between the sea and the sky, with the forest on one side and the imposing ocean on the other.

Ljungskile is home not only to a fine STF hostel but also the largest kayak centre in Sweden, with over 50 models to choose from.

The hostel is part of the Ljungskile Folk High School and our guests are housed in the old “Kavaljersgården”, which has taken its name from a novel by Sweden’s Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf. This was the hall of residence for male students, and it was forbidden to have female guests in the rooms right up until the 1970s. The stoic atmosphere of calm enhances your beautiful view of the sea, only a few minutes’ walk away.

Guests at the hostel have ready access to a fantastic range of outdoor activities including forest rambles, kayaking and sea-bathing from sandy beaches or from rocky cliffs. Golf is a major activity at Ljungskile and is played at the distinguished “Lyckorna” golf club, against the backdrop of the ocean. Local attractions include Smögenbryggan with its quaint huts, Swedish troubadour and song-writer Evert Taube’s haunts at Flatön, and the Vitlycke Museum with its unique bronze-age rock carvings. A wonderful walk in the footsteps of Göteborg’s high society will bring you to the place where King Oscar II carved the rock.

We are a hostel located at a folk high school which is a boarding school so usually there is a lot of activity going on in the likes of movies and conserts etc. But don't be discouraged if it if peace and quiet you are looking for, we have plenty of nature just around the corner and lots of woods to stroll through. If the ocean is more appealing you you then ofcourse we got a stunning view for overlooking the bay. (Please note that not all rooms have an ocean view.)

Street Map and Route Planning

Directions

Bus:Busses usually depart hourly from both Uddevalla and Gothenburg. Please note that Ljungskile is not the end destination and just a stop on most routes. Getting here from the bus stop is easy, just walk across the road up to the train station, across the tracks and take a right on the road paralell to the tracks, take the second road to your left, the one just after the tennis court and continue on it uphill for 5-10 min and you'll be here.
Metro:There is no metro in Ljungskile
Parking:We have plenty of parking spaces and all of them are free.
Sea port:We have a small guest harbour in Ljungskile. If you wish to pay us a visit look up the hill and note the big yellow houses at the forest line, that's us. Take the walkway from the harbour across the highway and follow the road into the city center. Take a right at the ICA store and walk across the railroad tracks. Take the next left and then a right at the next junction. Follow this road (called Pilvägen) uphill until you get to a pedestrian crossing, there take another right, you now see the yellow buildings so just continue uphill until the end of the road and you're here.
Location:Our hostel is located up the hill from Ljungskile center. It's the big yellow houses at the end of the road called 'Allén'. The walk is 500 meters uphill and takes about 10 min from the center of Ljungskile.
Rail:From the railroad station building, walk across the tracks, take to the right on the road that runs paralell to the tracks. When you get to the road called Nedre Allén (2nd on your left side) follow that one all the way up and you arrive here after 5-10 minutes depending on your pace.
Airport:From Landvetter Airport (GOT) take the airport shuttle or taxi to Gotenburg central station. Then hop on a bus or train heading north, there are plenty to choose from.

Variation in rooms - a friend who had paid for a dorm bed ended up in a single room that was far nicer than the room I had paid extra for. Cleaners came into my room at 6.15am in the morning - very alarming to be woken up by someone entering a locked room. They then made an incredible amount of noise for the next hour - not something that should be tolerated when there are paying guests - I see no reason why the cleaning could not have been done later in the day, especially given guests were expected to clean their own rooms before leaving.
