STF Abisko 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, has attracted visitors worldwide for more than 100 years. Enjoy a simple life in the mountains, hike along Kungsleden (Royal Trail) and discover Lapporten, Lake Torneträsk, Mount Nuolia and Abisko canyon.
It’s easy to get up to the bare mountain region from Abisko with the chair-lift. Before hiking further into the mountains, get some extra energy with a coffee break at the Panorama Café. You can see the full splendour of the midnight sun during the weeks around Midsummer. Aurora Sky Station is also up on Nuolia – Sweden’s best place to see the Aurora Borealis. No background lighting or other hindrances to disturb your view and Abisko’s meteorological location means that the Aurora Borealis is often shown here.
When snow is on the ground, the chair-lift is then your way to challenging off-piste skiing down Mount Nuolia, 500 metres of altitude with steep cliffs, high snow drifts and heaps of snow. You can also participate in one of the mountain station’s courses to perfect your technique and knowledge of, for example, skiing, ice climbing and avalanche proficiency.
The station has knowledgeable mountain guides who will gladly take you hiking to the region’s wild strawberry spots and show you a whole new side to our mountains. Get rejuvenated back at the mountain station after a day in the mountains with a three-course supper before your next excursion into the wilderness. If you want to give yourself a particular reward, try the luxurious wood heated sauna down by Lake Torneträsk, Sweden’s next deepest lake. A dip is guaranteed refreshing.
If one day you’re in the mood for a break from the mountains, travel easily over the border to the Norwegian coast and the city of Narvik or down to the mines in Kiruna.
Additional fee for non-members : 100 SEK per person per night

| I would not stay there again, as the busload of young Americans were so noisy until 2am, despite repeated requests to be quiet. | ||

| Kitchen is fine, but small for 300 beds. No wifi at hostel, but was advertised. Reception (a separate building) had a small area if wifi but login details provided didn't work. Checkin closed at 1pm in low season so no help there. Be aware that only after you have paid you will be handed a slip of house rules which states you must vacuum and mop your room before exit and sign that you have done so. The same notice is on the back of the door of the room, but wasn't mentioned by staff at checkin or the website and frankly I don't even think this would be an achievable action in a dorm room where you might be leaving at 5am and having sleeping room mates. For what we paid for the room and the facilities available it was quite an unreasonable request and as far as I'm concerned doesn't form part if our contract. (We left after 1 night and went to the hostel at Abisko Östra which was great.) | ||
