STF Abisko 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, has attracted visitors worldwide for more than 100 years. Enjoy a simple life in the mountains, hike along Kungsleden (Royal Trail) and discover Lapporten, Lake Torneträsk, Mount Nuolia and Abisko canyon.

It’s easy to get up to the bare mountain region from Abisko with the chair-lift. Before hiking further into the mountains, get some extra energy with a coffee break at the Panorama Café. You can see the full splendour of the midnight sun during the weeks around Midsummer. Aurora Sky Station is also up on Nuolia – Sweden’s best place to see the Aurora Borealis. No background lighting or other hindrances to disturb your view and Abisko’s meteorological location means that the Aurora Borealis is often shown here.

When snow is on the ground, the chair-lift is then your way to challenging off-piste skiing down Mount Nuolia, 500 metres of altitude with steep cliffs, high snow drifts and heaps of snow. You can also participate in one of the mountain station’s courses to perfect your technique and knowledge of, for example, skiing, ice climbing and avalanche proficiency.

The station has knowledgeable mountain guides who will gladly take you hiking to the region’s wild strawberry spots and show you a whole new side to our mountains. Get rejuvenated back at the mountain station after a day in the mountains with a three-course supper before your next excursion into the wilderness. If you want to give yourself a particular reward, try the luxurious wood heated sauna down by Lake Torneträsk, Sweden’s next deepest lake. A dip is guaranteed refreshing.

If one day you’re in the mood for a break from the mountains, travel easily over the border to the Norwegian coast and the city of Narvik or down to the mines in Kiruna.

Communication between Reception and Restaurant was rubbish. Twice we made a dinner reservation with Reception and the restaurant did not receive it. You must do something about your telephone answering service. it should be available all the time Reception is open. We arrived in Stockholm on Feb 4th only to find the Train to abisko cancelled. At 17.10 I tried to call, to get local infrmation on the conditions in Abisko and discuss the options open to us. All we got was the answer phone saying you were closed. We flew to Kiruna, arriving at 13.00 and got to the railway station. There were 10 people at the station all with reservations with you and all trying to get to the Abisko Hostel. We tried to contact the hostel to explain our problems and try to get advice on how to get to you and all we got was the answer phone.

It would be better to open the sauna sooner. The opening hours for the shop can be wider. Concerning the shower, a separation between the space where you shower and the place where you put your clothes can be good too.

Fantastic location and atmosphere. Very friendly staff. I stayed in the Keron building which standard is 'average' and definitely too expensive.
