KURA means warehouse --- Since the 17th century, Kurashiki has been an important point in maritime traffic between the local area and Osaka. Rice, rapeseed oil, rush (used for making Tatami mat), cotton were hauled by canal. During the Edo era, Kurashiki came under the direct control of the Shogunate and the spinning industry flourished. The economic development has continued to this day.
