Konin city is located in central Poland, on the Warta river, in the eastern part of Wielkopolska. The population of it is 83,400 inhabitants. The A2 Motorway connecting Warsaw to Poznan, and being a part of international route Berlin - Moscow, runs through the city, as well as, the national north - south Highway No 25 (Bydgoszcz - Kalisz). Additional transporting opportunities are the railway route Berlin - Moscow, and the river port on the Warta, which via the network of canals and lakes connects Konin to the Baltic Sea. Konin is a big industrial center as the nature fitted its territory with resources of brown coal. Yet, it is characterized by large high-value natural areas including elements of ecological structures. Konin city is also an important sub-region cultural center where some international and national events take palce, e.g. International Children Song and Dance Festival, National Amateur Film Contest, National Classical Guitar Contest, and National Singing Sailors Contest "Golden Shackle". Konin has also its own cultural property of unique world-wide character; among others, towerless castle built on the south-eastern shore of the Goslawickie Lake (1420-1426), Gothic St. Andrew Apostle Church founded in the 15th century in Goslawice. For ages the symbol of Konin was the oldest singpost (from 1151) called "Milestone" making the halfway between Kruszwica and Kalisz. Central location of Konin county and its clear natural environment, lakes, forests complexes, scenery parks, gardens, nature monuments make this region favourable for tourists servises such as: water tourism (canoeing, rowing, windsurfing, water ski), hike and bicykle tourism, fishing, etc. Sanctuary of Lichen Virgin Mary, located 10 km to the north from Konin city, is the second target point for the religious pilgrims from the whole Poland.
