So much to do, so little time! Sample the lively pubs and good restaurants which use fresh local produce. Enjoy a wealth of festivals: Folk, Blues, Sailing, Food, Science and the most celebrated-the St Magnus Festival in June. You certainly shouldn't miss the world -class archaeological sites including the neolothic chambered tomb at Maes Howe, Skara Brae (5000 years' old), the standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar and the Tomb of the Eagles. And remember the finest medieval building in the north of Scotland, the beautiful 12thC St Magnus Cathedral, originally started by the Vikings, & the tiny sanctuary of the Italian Chapel. Take advantage of good guided tours from the helpful TIC or rent a bike from the town (the island is fairly flat!). And finish off with a well appreciated tour round the most northerly distillery - Highland Park. Orkney is famous for its huge seabird colonies and its the extensive subaqua dive opportunities in the clear water of Scapa Flow. Otters and seals abound, and the flora is extensive on the rich earth of the countryside. If you have time, go island-hopping by plane or fby ferry The hostel is large, well-equipped, welcoming and comfortable, having small rooms, a large airy dining room & a well equipped kitchen plus a good drying room with laundry facilities. Private rooms available.
