After a busy day enjoying the majestic beauty of New Zealand tallest mountain, Aoraki / Mt Cook, come back to our spacious alpine lodge backpacker accommodation and enjoy a good nights sleep in the natural surroundings of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, located in the heart of the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

YHA Mt Cook backpacker lodge and hostel offers relaxed accommodation with warm and inviting living areas with guitars, games, free videos and a free sauna ! In summer make use of the picnic area outside and breathe in the pure New Zealand mountain air. All local tour bookings can be arranged free of charge at the hostel and the friendly, knowledgeable staff will be happy to advise you about the best travel, accommodation and activity opportunities for backpackers in the Aoraki / Mount Cook area and the central South Island region. The accommodation rates at YHA Mt Cook include a $1 per night community levy to assist with Aoraki / Mount Cook village development.

About Aoraki / Mt Cook village and the national park The YHA Mt Cook hostel is situated close to Aoraki / Mount Cook, the tallest mountain in Australasia. There are a number of glaciers around Aoraki / Mount Cook including the Tasman Glacier, New Zealand’s longest glacier. Experience the glacier boat trips on the terminal lakes where you will get close to the only icebergs in Australasia, explore some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand on a unique glacier sea kayaking adventure, one of the best sub-alpine experiences to try when in the Aoraki Mount Cook area. Aoraki / Mount Cook village is surrounded by beautiful nature walks for all abilities - some of the most beautiful on Earth we might add! For a bird’s eye view take a scenic flight over the majestic Southern Alps to the wild West Coast and some planes will even land you (precariously) on top of the Tasman Glacier. The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre is located near the hostel and has a fascinating museum, planetarium and 3D movie theatre. There are climbing courses and stargazing tours which can also be booked free from YHA Mt Cook hostel. Aoraki / Mount Cook village also has some great restaurants, cafes and bars :- Tasty casual fare at the Old Mountaineers Café Bar and Restaurant and fine dining at the celebrated Hermitage Hotel. Situated right in the centre of the Southern Alps of the South Island, Aoraki / Mt Cook village is located near the popular tourist spots of Lake Tekapo, Omarama, Twizel and is a 3 or 4 hour drive from Queenstown and Christchurch.

There were a lot Asian people (like 80%) who left a big mess and you couldn't be in the open area as they wear just so noise and also produced a lot of smoke while cooking. I gues other wise we would have felt welcome but we didn't have the fealing to be right.

Mt Cook was one of my favorite places. How fantastic to stay right near trails and fantastic views of this Park. Could use a bit more inside 'living room' area when the weather is poor (not in the TV room.) Kinda wish there was no TV in such a pretty place, it deserves reflection and quiet. Sauna great at the end of the day!!
