Point Montara Lighthouse is situated on the rugged California coast, 25 miles south of San Francisco. A historic 1875 fog signal station and lighthouse have been preserved and restored by HI-AYH and the California Department of Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Coast Guard. Explore the coastline; watch annual gray whale migration (Nov-April). Visit the nearby James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a four-mile stretch of tide pools full of starfish, crabs, mussels, abalone, and sea anemones. Enjoy beaches, swim, surf, kayak, jog, horseback ride, windsurf and bicycle along the shore.
Guests are accommodated in both shared and private rooms in former Coast Guard quarters and the historic fog signal building. Enjoy cozy lounges, a secluded beach cove with tide pools, and landscaped native plant gardens. Amenities include DSL Internet and free WiFi, on-site laundry, free parking, and an espresso bar. In addition, you can rest assured that your travel footprint will be minimized, as the hostel is a certified green business.

| The boys at front desk were cute and sweet. Their smiles made my day. Also a plus: the kitchen is super-well-organized and clean; nice to have filtered drinking water. | ||

| Great location. Love the private room option. | ||

| We stayed at 3 hostels over the past week and Montara was easily the best on all dimensions. I rate it only fair for value, as we were traveling as a family and our room cost about what a decent (not luxury) hotel room might cost -- it clearly wasn't the budget option a hostel ought to be. I like the spartan, community feel of hostels but it does seem a little steep.... | ||

| Phenomenal location! It would have been nice to have a less strict alcohol policy, such as reasonable beer/wine for those 21 and over. | ||

| this is one of the prettiest hostels ever. it's a bit inconvenient if you don't have a car, but definitely doable. stay here if you're in northern cal. you won't regret it. | ||

| I would give staff a higher rating if there was one. They are great. Also really liked the 'green' ethos of the hostel. Fabulous location and it is possible to get there by public transport with a little effort, which is a bonus. One of my favourite hostels of all time. | ||
