Guimarães es conocido y con razón como la cuna de Portugal. Se dice que el rey Alfonso Henriques nació aquí y que fue aquí en Guimarães donde Portugal consiguió su independencia por primera vez tras la batalla de St Mamede en 1128. Esta ciudad es también el lugar de nacimiento de un moderno y cómodo albergue juvenil que está justo al lado del centro histórico de Guimarães, considerado Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 2001. Una vez que te has instalado, puedes subir por la colina hasta el castillo, y después bajar hacia el palacio de los duques y, finalmente, relajarte en una de las cafeterías al aire libre que hay en Largo da Oliveira.
is quite rightly known as the cradle of Portugal. It is said that King Afonso Henriques was born here and also that it was at Guimarães that Portugal first became an independent nation, after the Battle of St Mamede in 1128. This town is also the birthplace of a new Youth Hostel which is right next to the historic centre of Guimarães - considered World Heritage since 2001. Once you're all settled, climb the hill to the castle, then walk down towards the Dukes' Palace, and finally sit comfortably at one of the outdoor cafés in Largo da Oliveira.
