Árnes is conveniently located close to all major tourist attractions in the South of Iceland, appr. 90 km from Reykjavík. Next door to the Hostel there is a swimming pool with a hot pot and a licenced restaurant, which provides lunch and dinner for individuals and groups. In the area around the Hostel there are good hiking trails. Appr. 30 km. from Árnes is Þjórsárdalur, Valley of the river Þjórsá, through which three other rivers flow as well, a landscape of sharp contrasts such as flourishing birch woods, sandy lava fields, rivers and waterfalls. Gjáin is a stunning ravine with lush vegetation, numerous springs, bizarre rock formations and a pictureseque little waterfall, Gjárfoss. Other remarkable waterfalls in the valley are Hjálparfoss and Háifoss. A flourishing farming community lived in þjórsárdalur after the settlement until the valley was swamped by ash from an eruption from Mt. Hekla in 1104 A.D. One of the ruined farms, Stöng, has been excavated and served as the model for the nearby Saga-Age farm reconstruction (Þjóðveldisbærinn). Next Hostels: Laugarvatn, 56 km and Fljótsdalur, 50 km.

| This hostel was priced high for the off season. We got a special rate at the hostel in Borgarnes and I think Arnes would do well to offer winter specials as well. We paid more for our room in Arnes than we did in Borgarnes and got less value for our money which left me thinking I will definitely recommend the Borgarnes Hostel to friends and may not be so encouraging about staying at the Arnes Hostel. That said, the people we met who took our money and gave us the keys were wonderful although I would have appreciated if they could take credit cards and not just cash which fortunately we had enough to pay the room fee. | ||

| Staying in early January, we were the only guests, and the owner was away (after greeting us) too! Suited us fine having the place to ourselves - lots of space! Homely too, and slept very well in the beds. | ||

| The staff took the time to show us where all the points of interest were in the area and mapped on a map for us. She also explained where we could buy food and the times that things closed. | ||
