A jewel of a hostel, this splendid country house in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District is a real treat. Hartington YHA is a wonderful base from which to explore on foot or by bike, or to visit the area’s rich variety of attractions.

Log fires, oak panelling and its own beer and music festival make this 17th century manor house a must – and Bonnie Prince Charlie even slept here. A picturesque area for cyclists and walkers with Alton Towers and Chatsworth House nearby. You can even get married here and stay in a luxury suite. Families will enjoy the pets area and adventure playground. Good home-cooked meals available. Accommodation is in 1-6+ bedded rooms and facilities include TV, self-catering kitchen, laundry, internet access and games room.

Ordered one of the specials for an evening meal. Nothing special at all. The Smoked Haddock fishcakes were tasty but it came with chips that were tasteless and the chopped cucumber, tomato and celery masqueraded as a salad. My idea of a salad are combinations of red, green and yellow peppers with red or spring onion, off the vine cherry tomatoes, radishes, iceberg or rocket lettuce. The meal would have been better with creamed mashed potatoes and garden peas not the predictable british chips. The service was hit and miss. We had booked for 7:30 but were not seated till 7:45. Breakfast was stated as 7:30. At 7:30 nothing cooked. It was 8:00am before cooked food sporadically arrived. For those of us that like to be out early doors this needs to be made clear so that other arrangements can be made.
