Our cosy hostel is only 10 km from Döda Fallet:
Immediately below the former Lake Ragunda in the Indal River, was until 1796 one of the most impressive waterfalls in Sweden, the magnificent Grand Rapids, with a total hight of approximately 35 metres. The Grand Rapids made timber floating impossible from the large woods above the fall, because the timber was crushed to sticks in the raging whirls. Due to this, a link for floating timber was planned to bypass the Grand Rapids and a merchant Magnus Huss 'Wild Huss' was commisioned to realise this project. The idea was to divert water from a creek near by to a gravel plateau and let the water from the creek dig a canal. In the night between 6th and 7th of June 1796 spring runoff had the water in the river so high that it started running through the canal, cutting itself through the gravel barrier. Within 4 hours Ragunda Lake was emptied of water, the river had changed its course and the Grand Rapids were dried out. In the Dead Falls and the canyon below you can study the tracks from ravaging water. Planked roads, steps and bridges go through the area and are, to a certain point, accessible to wheelchairs.
Activities. Summer. Walking, there are many beautiful routes. Cycling and mountain biking, who is not afraid of a small climb, can make beautiful trips Fishing, in the vicinity are many rivers and lakes. Especially the Ammerån is known for its excellent fishing. Canoe, make a nice trip on the Indalsälven Zorben into a large plastic ball hill unreeling. Picking mushrooms and berries in late summer and make delicious dishes with them.
