Hostel Details |
Haboro, a town with the Islands of Yagishiri and Teuri, is the middle point of Ororon Line Highway with magnificent scenery of the Sea of Japan. YH is located in the Sports Park, and there are a golf course at the back and the Park golf course in the front.
Ororon Line is a highway in the coastline that connects Otaru and Wakkanai. Cars, motorcycles, buses, and bicycles go through this highway, which runs beside the precipitous cliffs and under the pinwheels, looking at the islands of the Sea of Japan. Ororon is an alias of guillemot.
Haboro town is also famous worldwide because of good quality ammonite. Shiny ammonites are found. The university students come to here from June through September. To do research in the national forest in the mountain requires a permit, and they are dangerous and hard, but there are some places where you can easily collect them. You can pick up fossils even on the beach. There is also a place where a little bit of the gold dust can be picked up.

Pic9: The Island of Teuri
The Island of Teuri is a small island of 12km around with the population of about 450 people, 1 hour and 30 minutes by ferry and 1 hour by speedboat from the Haboro Port.
It takes about three hours on foot to go round the island. We recommend that you walk leisurely and slowly.
Half the island is covered with the precipitous cliffs, and seabirds visit here for breeding every year. You can watch seabirds with a telescope in the observation hut in the island. Especially, the rhinoceros auklets that come back in the evening are absolutely recommended. There are innumerable nest holes under the Akaiwa Observatory. At twilight 600,000 rhinoceros auklets return all together, holding small fish in their mouth that they captured in the sea in daytime. Their battles with sea gulls and black-tailed gulls are also worth seeing who try to snatch away the small fish that they captured for their babies.
When you have time in the island, we recommend the sightseeing ship for the sea bottom. You can see the precipitous cliffs from the under as well as the close look of the seabirds in the sea.
To our regret, you cannot see Ororon birds (Pelagic Cormorant) too much, whose breeding in Japan is confirmed only in the Island of Teuri, because their number is decreasing every year. However, There is higher probability if seen from the ship. In order to attract Ororon birds numerous decoys have been placed on the rocks in the precipitous cliffs.
April to July is the best time when the seabirds visit the island for breeding.
Pic10: The Island of Yagishiri
The Island of Yagishiri is also a small island of 12km around with the population of about 400 people, 55 minutes by ferry and 33 minutes by speedboat from the Haboro Port.
It takes about three hours to go round the island, and it is suitable to walk leisurely.
There is a forest near the port of the Island of Yagishiri that is covered with virgin forests such as Quercus mongolica, maples, and Japanese yew. 1/3 of the island is occupied by the forest. Due to the strong wind, there are a lot of trees that extend sideways. The forest is a stopover for migratory birds, and you may enjoy walking in the forest.
Unlike the Island of Teuri, there is no seabirds breeding area due to the lack of precipitous cliffs in this island. It is a gentle hill beyond the forest, and there is a pasture for sheep. If you walk past the pasture with a view of the ocean, you will arrive at Takanosu picnic site where you see the Island of Teuri in front of you. Then return to the port along the east shore to finish the 3-hour walk.
"Sea Urchin Festival" is held on the second Saturday and Sunday of July every year. Mutton is also available that was bred in this island.
