The Robert B. Johnson Memorial Hostel, named after a former HI-USA Executive Director, was built as a lifesaving station in 1873, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lookout station, or cupola, is still accessible from the women’s dormitory. The hostel is just minutes away from Surfside Beach and only 3.5 miles from the ferry docks and Nantucket village.
At the Nantucket Hostel, there is a fully equipped kitchen for preparing your own meals, a large dining area, outdoor picnic tables and bicycle racks. There are single sex and coed dorms and the hostel is a great place to bring your group. Breakfast, wifi access and parking are free. All bed linens and a bath towel are included in the overnight rate. The hostel also has one of the few sand volleyball courts on the island!
From the hostel take the bike path into town and check out the Whaling Museum to learn about the island's fascinating past. You can explore the island by bicycle, in-line skates, kayak, or on foot. Finish your day off with a seafood dinner or a sunset on the beach.

| All in all- a good hostel except for the noise and proximity to food. I would have loved warmer showers also.
NOISE: two of the guests has the most raucous voices. They were loud and unpleasant and sent me to bed early. It might have been helpful to at least had the expectation of keeping voices low so that others could enjoy the evening. (BTW- I am not a picky person. But these folks were way off the top).
LOCATON: There was no place accessible by bike to get food for dinner and as it was dark at nite- we didn't eat. A solution might have been to have had the option to sign up for dinner- or even a # for a pizza place that delivered. Others took a taxi to town- but that defeats the purpose of hosteling! | ||

| Bit of a walk now the in-season bus does not take you all the way to Surfside, but its an OK walk - especially when there's a bright moon! | ||

| Loved this hostel! The location was superb and the building was lovely. The only 'downer' for me was the large dorm style room because it can get loud with so many people in one large room. | ||
