On the rugged California coast, 25 miles south of San Francisco, historic 1875 fog signal station and lighthouse have been preserved and restored by HI-AYH and the California Department of Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Coast Guard. Explore the coastline; watch annual gray whale migration (Nov-April). Visit the nearby James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a four-mile stretch of tide pools full of starfish, crabs, mussels, abalone, and sea anemones. Enjoy beaches, swim, surf, kayak, jog, horseback ride, windsurf and bicycle along the shore.

Guests are accommodated in both shared and private rooms in former Coast Guard quarters and the historic fog signal building. Enjoy cozy lounges, a secluded beach cove with tide pools, and landscaped native plant gardens. Amenities include DSL Internet and free WiFi, on-site laundry, free parking, and an espresso bar. In addition, you can rest assured that your travel footprint will be minimized, as the hostel is a certified green business.

The coastside location of the Point Montara Lighthouse hostel offers convenient access to several beaches for swimming, surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, and horseback riding. The hostel is also the perfect base for exploring the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Pillar Point Harbor and Marsh, Mount Montara, and the quaint coastal town of Half Moon Bay

Please note 4 of our private rooms can accommodate up to 3 people, however the beds are Houston style consisting of a shared double bed on the bottom and a twin bunk above.

Staying in this hostel was my 60th birthday present to myself. I had always wanted to stay in one and figured it was time to go for it, better late than never. The scene from the kitchen picture window was fabulous. Most of the windows took advantage of great views, be it of the sea or the gardens. The hostel rooms and front door, with key pad entry, felt secure, as did the parking lot. Access to the beach was a real plus.

A great place with location close enough to drive into San Francisco or south to Half Moon Bay. Very Comfortable, friendly staff, love the picture window found in the kitchen!

thanks so much for such a warm welcoming place to stay. I had to get to the airport by 0600 and was successful in managing that amazing fence lock in the dark.....

My stay was terrific! What a wonderful location. I did have a small wait for service a couple of times, but only because other guests were taking a long time, or the only staff person there was momentarily away from the desk. Otherwise my stay was perfect!

The interior of the hostel was clean and tidy, and the views from the kitchen were particularly nice. The grounds of the hostel were fantastic as well. Nancy and other staff were very friendly and helpful. I was also very surprised that the hostel was serviced by bus like it was (we travelled down and back up from San Francisco and caught every bus right on time, no problems. As well as bused to half moon bay), however if you had a car that would be nice for when the hostel does it's lock out for cleaning as well as general convience. Rhe location itself though was beautiful, and I'm so glad we came down to stay! Thanks :-)
