In the Valley of the Kings, between Beauce and Sologne, an ancient town retains the charm of a prestigious, medieval city. Beaugency, ‘Princess of the Loire’, an hour and a half south-west of Paris, 30 minutes from Chambord, Blois and Orleans. Of this prestige there remains a keep from the 11th century ‘Tour Cesar’ and its’ legendary bridge. Chateau Dunois (Tel; 02 38 44 55 23) was built by Dunois, craftsman of the weapons of Jeanne d’Arc. Walkers can also discover l’Eglise Abbatiale Notre-Dame of the 12th century, the Tour St Firmin, the renaissance Hotel de Ville and its’ magnificent collection of eight embroidered wall hangings; the Tour de l’Horlodge and the Eglise Saint Etienne – one of the oldest roman churches in the Loire Valley – restored and fitted out as a cultural place. Beaugency is proud to be part of the Loire Valley, classed as a world heritage site by l’UNESCO.
