Great location, friendly staff, good breakfast

Great location for attending a conference and you pay a LOT less than anyone staying in a fancy hotel around the corner. Nightlife can be noisy if you're sensitive to it, but I was so exhausted after a day of conference sessions that it didn't bother me one bit. I never had trouble finding a free shower/toilet the entire week (and there were several other women there too, so that's pretty amazing!) If you're on a budget, it's definitely the place to stay.

The linens, towells and room's floor were dirty and with hairs. There were so much light coming throw the window at night and so much noisy on saturday night. In spite of that, the location is great, as so the breakfast.

Hostel response:
Thank you for your stay and the honest feedback. I meet with our housekeeping manager weekly, so I will be sure to tell her your feedback. Also, our location is really central, and as a result it can be noisy. It is always encouraged to request an interior or courtyard room for guests who are light sleepers. Thank you again for your stay and taking the time to write a review!

There was a clock in my room (306?) that didn't work. An issue of cleanliness: Not everyone issued sheets seems to bother making up their bed. I understand that pre-made beds would be a burden for management.

Hostel response:
You bring up a good point about people in dorms not making their bed. We have often debated ways resolving this issue, and with our current staffing the best solution we have come up with is wiping down the dorm beds after use (regardless of whether or not sheets were used) with a mild, hypo-allergenic cleaner. We do make the beds in all private rooms with double beds and all the bottom bunks in our four-person private rooms if you are interested in that for any future stays. Thank you for the review and safe travels to you!

Perhaps it would be nicer if kitchen and dining area is open 24/7.

Hostel response:
Thanks for the great review! We are a bit confused though, as our Kitchen/Dining area are open 24/7 for guests to cook and eat. We will follow up with your personally to find out what experience you had that made you think otherwise. Thanks again for the review, and we hope to see you next time. -HI San Diego Downtown

Great place! Lovely staff, good breakfast to start teh day, comfy rooms and an unbeatable location right in the centre...that might however also be a slight drawback: just a few streets further the area does get a bit dodgy and I'm not sure it is 100% safe to be out late alone if going towards 12 street and on...however as most of the sights are in the other direction this can be easily avoided anyway.

Hostel response:
Thank you for the lovely review. We can assure you that the area around the hostel, and even down into the East Village, is quite safe. The East Village is a much neglected neighborhood that is just now beginning to be restored, much like the Gaslamp Quarter used to be. I'm sure that when you return, you will not even recognize that section of town. As always we appreciate the comments and the business. -HI San Diego Downtown
