Country Overview
Relax on tropical white-sand beaches; trek high Andean mountain chains with everlasting snow; cross sand dune deserts; hike through deep Amazon jungle pierced by table mountains. Venezuela is a Caribbean country of huge natural contrasts, all just hours apart by bus. Soak up the history of Christopher Columbus, European conquerors, native aborigines, black African slaves. Sample the rich culture of bull rides, indigenous food and drum dancing. Learn about Caracas-born Simon Bolivar: this national hero led several countries to independence from Spanish rule and is commemorated with a “Plaza Bolivar” in every town, from aborigine communities in the Amazon jungle to the major cities. Be dazzled by the contrast of modern skyscrapers, green areas and huge “barrios” (poor communities) in big cities like Caracas, Valencia and Maracaibo. The great nightlife, beautiful women and warm salsa-dancing people make Venezuela one of the most attractive destinations in Latin America.Membership

Travelling Around
For ease of travel use Planes, Ferries, buses or self-drive. Except for the fast and modern Metro (Caracas subway) there are no other passenger train services. There are several international airports and good service between major cities; however, domestic flights are not cheap and many places can be reached more cheaply by bus. Renting a car is expensive (nearly US$100/day) but fuel is very cheap. Avoid driving in major cities.Travel Advice
Hostelling International advises you always to check with your own national authorities (Foreign Ministry, State Department etc.) concerning the need for visas, any safety concerns, or any specific restrictions, which may apply in the countries to which you intend to travel.Health
Medical insurance is recommended.HI-eKit Access Number

National Guards/Police frequently check identity cards – visitors are advised to keep a copy of their passport with them at all times. In Caracas, it is better to take a taxi at night rather than bus/metro. Avoid the ‘barrios’ (poor areas), and avoid displaying expensive clothing, digital cameras etc. Change currency in authorized places only !Opening times
