Taiwan: Country Overview

Visit Buddhist and Taoist pagodas and shrines; hike in hills and forests; go grass skiing; learn the art of shadow boxing; spend at night at the (Chinese) opera; eat dim sum. Called Formosa by the Portuguese sailors who arrived here in the 16th century, the island of Taiwan is now governed by the Chinese Democratic Progressive Party. It is a place of bustling cities, mountains and waterfalls. In the north the lively capital, Taipei, features the National Palace Museum, which holds probably the world's biggest collection of Chinese art. The east boasts the natural wonders of Wenshan hot springs and the Taroko Gorge, with its Eternal Spring shrine. The south offers placid lakes, sandy beaches and the extraordinary temple town of Tainan. Situated in the southern port town of Kaohsiung, Taiwan's two hostels are good gateways for exploring this colourful island.
