Hostelling in Tunisia
Dune ski in the desert; windsurf along the seashore; go camel trekking; watch the sun rise over the Sahara; visit Roman ruins and legendary cities; see local life in a hammam or Turkish bath. Tunisia presents beachside pleasures as well as glorious archaeological sites and intriguing desert life inland. In the south, the island of Djerba is ringed with sandy shores and features Roman remains as well as apple and fig orchards. Tunis, the capital, is both a modern city and an ancient town dating from the 7th century and ribboned with narrow streets. The centuries–old city of Carthage is nearby, with its Roman baths, amphitheatre and museums. Kairouan is the spiritual centre of the country and boasts superb architecture dating from the 9th century, as well as an impressive tradition of carpet making. From the oasis town of Gafsa to the pretty port of Bizerte on the Mediterranean coast, Tunisia has hostels offering easy access to many of the highlights of this absorbing country.Membership
