Cross-country ski through empty white landscapes; hike over glaciers and around lakes; watch moose in the wild; go dog sledding; see the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter. Sweden offers an appealing combination of beauty, fresh air activities and lively towns. In the north, the Sarek National Park is a magnificent region of peaks and glaciers. In the north east Jokkmokk is the centre of the colourful Sami culture. Hoga Kusten (High Coast) on the mid-eastern seaboard is a stunning area of majestic cliffs and rivers. Stockholm, the capital, is an ancient town turned chic designer city, with intriguing museums and shops. In the south Oland island features haunting ruins - and 400 windmills; while the entire medieval port of Visby on Gotland island has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) has a wide network of over 320 hostels as well as 10 mountain lodges and 40 mountain huts - and also offers a dedicated travel department.
