Slovenia: Country Overview

Ski in majestic mountains; hike through forests and around unspoilt lakes; see eagles and marmots in the wild; visit ancient churches; relax in thermal waters. Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has been an independent nation since 1991. It offers magnificent, varied countryside and a host of picturesque villages and towns - as well as 16 health resorts bubbling with mineral springs. Ljubljana, the gracious capital, is studded with Roman legacies and features Baroque buildings and a maze of intriguing, narrow streets. To the north west, the Julian Alps are a haven for winter sports enthusiasts while Lake Bled and its famous castle offer sublime scenery and rich history. The limestone Karst region to the south has more than 1,000 underground caves and features vanishing rivers and even vanishing lakes. The Adriatic coast presents quiet beaches and pretty harbour villages. Slovenia's hostels are well located for access to some of the most enticing parts of the country. Find out more about Slovenia!
