Country Overview
Visit ancient sites and Ottoman forts; browse around colourful markets; watch the setting sun turn sand dunes pink; see mountains and forested hills; picnic in the desert. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia occupies four fifths of the Arabian Peninsula and encompasses fertile lowlands; a stony plateau in the centre; vast sandy tracts; and a mountainous area by the Red Sea coast. Riyadh, the capital, offers intriguing museums as well as the Musmat Fortress while just beyond are the ruins of Dirýaiyah. To the west coast are the great pilgrimage places of Makkah and Medina as well as the scenic mountain town of Taif and the ancient city of Jeddah, with its Ottoman buildings, its enormous souk (or market) and its three old city gates. In the south are the ornate ruins of Timna and Shiban and the appealing, oasis town of Najran. Saudi Arabia's hostels offer easy access to many of the country's highlights.Membership
