Hostelling in New Caledonia
Dive or snorkel over the world's second largest coral reef; windsurf in turquoise waters; hike in spectacular, forested hills; go biking with the locals; watch traditional pilou dances; listen to the music of conch shells and bamboo flutes. A French overseas territory set in the South Pacific between Australia and Fiji, the islands of New Caledonia boast white–sand beaches, an astonishing variety of plants, animals and fish, and striking, dense green mountains. The Mainland is divided by a range of hills: to the east are lush valleys, rivers and waterfalls; to the west is a drier zone of cattle country - and equally fine sandy shores. Beyond are the little visited Loyalty Islands while to the south Ile des Pins is an idyllic island of swaying palms and soaring Araucaria pines. New Caledonia's hostel in the capital, Noumea, makes a good starting point for touring this lovely, unspoilt archipelago.Membership
