Country Overview
Visit medieval monasteries and Roman ruins; hike through green and gorgeous landscapes; meander along colourful bazaars; listen to the music of the gajda (bagpipes); ski inexpensively. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia became fully independent in 1992. It offers a rich blend of Greek, Albanian, Serb and Bulgarian cultures as well as spectacular scenery of mountains, lakes and rivers. Skopje, the capital, is both an ancient and modern city: a 15th-century stone bridge gives access to the old town with its museums, Turkish baths and churches. To the south west the absorbing town of Ohrid is set on a picturesque lake and offers frescoed churches, fortress ruins and other archaeological sights, while Struga nearby boasts a lively Saturday market. In the south Bitola presents the ruins of Heraclea, dating from the 4th century. Macedonia's hostel in Skopje is a good gateway to the absorbing sights and lovely countryside of this undervisited country.Membership
