Country Overview
Visit ancient Greek and Roman sites; dive among submerged ruins; watch sunrise over vast desert tracts; windsurf along extensive, unspoilt beaches; bargain for figs and dates in colourful markets. Reaching from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the vast, empty stretches of the Sahara, Libya is a land of startling variety - and famously hospitable people (many of whom are very young: half the population is aged under 15). The north offers the green mountains of Jebel Akhdar; the great archaeological remains of Leptis Magna; and the temples and tombs of Cyrene. Tripoli, the capital, is an intriguing mix of Turkish and Italian colonial architecture set beside a labyrinthine old walled city. The south offers great seas of sand, with camel trails, spectacular shifting dunes, and a liberal sprinkling of verdant, oleander–filled oases. Libya's network of hostels provides a good choice of accommodation for exploring the highlights of this diverse country.Membership
