Country Overview
Hike through forests and over rolling pastures; cross–country ski along quiet trails; see arctic tern and purple heron; canoe down rushing rivers; look for amber on the sea shore. A land of unspoilt beaches, ancient woodland and thousands of lakes, Lithuania was recognised as an independent country in 1991. Its gregarious people are proudly nationalistic, and retain much of their traditional culture as a matter of honour. Vilnius, the vibrant capital, has an extensive old centre with winding alleyways and more than 1,500 historic buildings. Nearby is the charming town of Trakai, with its absorbing castle museum. To the south are the spa centres of Druskininkai and Birstonas. In the west Palanga is the country's top seaside resort and offers long stretches of sand backed by pine forests. To the north is the extraordinary Hill of Crosses where thousands of crucifixes have been placed as a symbolic gesture of spiritual freedom. Lithuania's hostels are convenient gateways for exploring this intriguing country.Membership
