Country Overview
Visit Roman ruins and ancient cities; ski, then swim in the sea all within a day; see Orthodox churches and intricate Islamic architecture; muse over the words of mystic poet Gibran Khalil Gibran; eat baklava pastries. Within a small space, Lebanon is packed with variety - in terms of both landscape and sights. The west coast boasts Byblos, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, its historic walls dating from 2800 BC. North of Beirut, the capital, are the great grottoes of Jeita, with their enormous stalactites and stalagmites. To the east are the glorious Roman temples of Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley. To the south is the great 18th–century palace complex of Beiteddine. From the Eco Club at Becharre, offering skiing, nature walks, mountain biking and more, to the pine–clad hills around Ras El Metn and the Mount Joli resort of Bhersaf, Lebanon offers hostels which are well placed for exploring the diverse attractions of this sunny country.Membership
