See the stupendous tombs of the Pharaohs; ride across the desert on camelback; gaze at the underwater wonders of some of the world's richest coral reefs; bargain for souvenirs in the winding city souks. At Cairo, Luxor and Aswan the pyramids and temples of the ancient world are the biggest draw to this teeming country of around 70 million people. But there's much more to see and do as well: felucca sailing trips along the Nile; glorious diving and snorkelling in the Red Sea at Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh; treks across the sand dunes of the Sinai; visits to the Suez Canal and Port Said; explorations of the Greek and Roman remains at Alexandria; and beachside excursions to the northern, Mediterranean coast. From Matruh in the north west, to Nasir Lake in the south, Egypt's hostels provide access to the highlights of the country, and many can organise sightseeing or activity packages.
